'Conversations with Claire'

Claire is writing a fortnightly article for South Gippsland Sentinel-Times, a regional newspaper (Australia)
Her first article is as follows:
In today’s busy world, it’s easy to forget what’s important. Distractions and demands all vie for our attention. Stack on family, work, education and other commitments, and it may seem like there’s barely enough time to complete daily tasks.
Yet, what if there were a way to ease tension and enjoy the journey rather than rushing through life? Something that everyone has instant access to, that doesn’t cost a thing and can be done at any time?
One of the tools I teach people is to simply breathe. Naturally, breath is an integral part of our human form and therefore, an innate ability we all possess. Yet, it is something many of us forget to do.
Maybe you’re asking, ‘How can I implement this into my life?’
It’s a straightforward process of slowly breathing into the diaphragm, holding space for a few moments before gently exhaling. Some people find counting beneficial - Breathing into the count of 4, holding for 4, then breathing out for 4. Another option that may be helpful is to repeat the word ‘relax’ until a sense of calm envelops you.
The ultimate goal is to reeducate the subconscious to switch from shallow, or rapid breathing to a deeper rhythmic pattern. The benefits are many, including having a positive influence on the nervous system, calming one’s emotions and living more at the moment rather than worrying about the past or the future.
So next time you find yourself in a space of fight, flight, anxiety or overwhelm, I invite you to take a moment to drop your shoulders, slow down your breath and be still. Gradually, you’ll find your breathing will reset back to its natural state.
As you continue to practice and incorporate this habit throughout your day, you’ll notice you have more time, focus and be able to handle challenges more easily.
The breath and meditation go hand in hand – next time I’ll offer tools to further support your mental health journey back to wellbeing.
